Keyword research is one of the most overlooked aspects of search engine optimization, but it is perhaps the most important.

There are ads everywhere on the Internet from companies offering guaranteed top-10 placements for your keywords in Google, Yahoo, etc. If you stop and think about it, not every keyword can be in the top 10 in search engine listings. Let’s just say that you decide you want a guaranteed top-10 placement for the keyword Pepsi, and you contact one of those agencies to make the request. A quick Google search shows that there are more than 30 million Web sites indexed for that keyword. If the owners of any 11 of those companies contact the “guarantee” company and ask for top 10 for Pepsi, obviously at least one of those companies would not be in the top 10, and therefore the guarantee could not be fulfilled.

That’s one of about 30 million reasons why keyword research is important. If your site is about Pepsi, search engine users are going to have to go through about 3 million pages of Google results to find you. You can understand why successful companies that can get your site correctly optimized for search engines are in high demand when you consider the fact that the vast majority of people don’t make it past the first page or two on Google or Yahoo.

Deciding on a more narrow focus for the site is one way to deal with the Pepsi problem described above. For example, if you decided to do a site on the Pepsi logo, instead of just Pepsi, a check of Google shows that there are 222,000 sites indexed for the keyword phrase Pepsi logo. While it’s still not a slam dunk, your chances of achieving a first-page rating increased by 135 percent. There are 14,400 sites indexed in Google for the keyword phrase Pepsi logo redesign, if you would decide to take the focus-narrowing process one more step. Your chances for a first-page ranking just improved by another 15 percent by doing so.

Finding the keyword niche that works best for what you are trying to achieve with your site and your online marketing is one of the problems OurNEWSCafe.com works to solve for its clients. Another very important step in the process is to investigate and find out just how many people are searching online for the targeted keyword or keyword phrase. In this case, we discovered that there are very few searches for the keyword phrase Pepsi logo redesign in any given month, so a first-page ranking for that phrase still may not generate enough clicks and page views to accomplish your goals.

OurNEWSCafe.com exists to take care of all of those keyword research related issues for you so you can do what you do best: run your business.

SEO Your Web Site in 8 Steps

Written by Announcement Author on Sunday, October 25th, 2009 in Web Design, Marketing and Development.

There are a number of steps I always follow when optimizing a site for SEO (note these are just the high points, there are others that I don’t mention here, but these WILL take you a long way):

1) For a new site, I will include the keywords in a non hyphenated domain name (if you can get a .edu or .gov suffix do so, otherwise a cheap .info will be ok)

2) If possible, I will rename the URL to each important page to include the main keyword for that page.

3) Implement Google Analytics for the site and ensure the tracking script is added to every page (if not already done).

4) Go through the “money” pages and make sure that the title, meta descriptions and meta keywords tags are different and optimized for the keywords on the page. In a competitive niche (over 1 million result pages in Google), I would limit the keywords to one main phrase, a couple of local modifiers and one or two more closely related terms per page.

5) Go through the non-money pages (i.e. pages that are irrelevant from an SEO perspective) and ensure the title and meta description tags are not duplicates of any of the money page tags. Google Webmaster tools will identify this for you once your site has been registered and crawled.

6) I also nofollow any links to overhead pages from all of the pages on the site other than the home page. I leave the home page links as follow links, since I want the SEs to index all pages on the site and having privacy, contact, disclaimer, etc pages add to Google’s view of the “trust” for the site. On all other pages I want only the link to the home page to be a follow link, so I can build up the page rank of the home page. I handle this in Dreamweaver by using two different site templates, one for the home page and one for the rest of the pages on the site. If your main keyword page is something other than the home page, modify your approach accordingly.

7) I then optimize each pages content for it’s main keywords, modifiers and related terms. It’s important that each word or phrase used in the keyword META is found somewhere on the page to avoid keyword spam issues.

8) At this point the on page optimization is complete enough to start with link building. As you may already know, building links is not a piece of cake. I use articles, blog posts, submit forms on relevant sites, reciprocal links, etc. There are ways to make this process less time consuming, without going black or even grey hat. Viral Marketing also known otherwise as Viral Advertising is a way of marketing based upon the effect you get when people tell other people about the viral product. Advertising agencies can use many forms of media to reach out to the public without actually promoting the product by riding on in other forms of addictive means that could get a person hooked and be obliged or amused to actually pass it on, with the product or company advertisement along with it.

How to Stay Away from Costly Google Adwords Mistakes

Written by Announcement Author on Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 in Web Design, Marketing and Development.

Creating an effective Google Adwords campaign can be challenging for both the beginner and the expert, especially if you are just entering a new niche or approaching your target market for the first time. More often than not, people would allot a big chunk of their time and effort monitoring the market and their competitors, but it’s the creation of ads and their optimization that provide the real essence. However, this technique is not free from any lapses or mistakes and can entail loss on your part.

Several ways and techniques to developing Adwords campaign that get results are suggested by Perry Marshall in his publication The Definitive Guide to Google Adwords, yet there are still some who commit mistakes when doing keyword research and in attempting to achieve maximum efficiency in their campaigns.

Building your Google Adwords campaign and ensuring that quality traffic is generated requires that you avoid the following common mistakes:

1. Creating an ad copy that has no keywords. Many Adwords campaign managers make the mistake of only using the keyword in the headline, and then nowhere else within the ad. The keywords used and their relevance are some of the factors that affect the outcome of your ad campaign, so make sure that your ad contains at least one or two keywords or keyphrases.

2. Leading the visitors to go to your page. You’ll generate much more attention and even higher conversion rates when the URL you use within your ad goes directly to a landing page with the offer or incentive, and not just your homepage.

3. Using only the ‘broad match’ feature of the Keyword Selector Tool. There are other options apart from the ‘broad match’ feature that allows you to have a basic idea on the keywords you can use in your niche or market. Use the ‘phrase match’ and ‘exact match’ features in the tool to generate a highly targeted list of keywords that you can use both for your ads and your website copy.

4. Using a set of keywords that do not actually give results. Assuming that people will be searching for your products or services using keywords you used online may not hold water all the time; hence, you must interpret what your target market’s needs are, though it may take some time to do so. You will need to generate a list of relevant and similar keywords using the ‘synonyms’ feature on the Google Adwords Keyword Selector Tool to drill down search results and optimize your campaign.

5. Showing your offer only in the body copy. Make sure you emphasize the ‘ultimate benefit’ right away in the headline of your copy. Apply a visualization technique about your viewer or reader looking at your headlines; do they have enough reasons to click through your copy’s content? Viewers scan even the smallest of details even though Google Adwords ads have only 3 to 4 lines, but what is good to note is that they only react when something presented grabs their attention, your opportunity to do this lies right in your headline.
